How a Nafpaktos Road Trip Became a Great Driving Experience

THE Naupactus in itself, it is a beautiful destination. It combines the sea, good food, cultural options, all within a short distance from each other. After settling into our room, we had the opportunity to stroll around the Venetian harbour. One of the most important battles of all time took place here Naval Battle of Nafpaktos, in 1571. The most famous man who fought and was injured in this battle is honored today in the Greek city with a statue. We do not know him by his military work but by his writing. He is the Miguel Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote.

The historicity of the place was also present when we crossed the alleys and the narrow streets which lead to the castle of the city. To climb the castle, some effort is required, but it will be compensated by the view.

The next day, we decided to combine sea and mountains. Chiliados Beach it’s big, sandy, with plenty of beach bars. It’s crystal clear and if you get there early in the season like we did, you’ll avoid the crowds. We spent a few leisurely hours in the sun or in the water, then set off for the part of the excursion that will surely fascinate fans of “motorization”.

The beautiful Mountainous Nafpaktia with the difficult road network was in itself a reason to arrive here with the Citroen C3 Aircross. The word “escape” is a common travel cliché but here it takes on its full meaning. As we navigate the endless bends and the successive ups and downs, we are amazed by the endless forests of beech, walnut and chestnut trees.

From time to time, we see in the distance a village which seems to have “climbed” on the slope. Anyone driving here needs to be alert. A fox, a squirrel, or even a deer may suddenly appear in front of him on the road. This happened to us with a squirrel and we had the opportunity to see how perfectly it works its braking system auto.

Our first stop was at the beautiful amphitheater high country with the stone houses, the uphill cobblestones and the magnificent view of the green mountain peaks. A coffee stop in its square is obligatory for anyone who comes here. The next stop was the Ambelakiotissa, a village that prides itself on its running water. Inside and outside the village there are around 10 fountains, some beside the streams, some in the trees and some on the village roads. We walked to beautiful Kakavos gorge and we returned to the village because we were now hungry.

We had a great time in the Nafpaktos mountains. We chose to return to our room in the evening to have the night driving experience. Citroën’s new “signature”, the elegant LED headlights they are very effective and offer excellent visibility in the dark.
