Kyparissi: The unpretentious seaside gem of Laconia

A truly traditional destination

With its current name, the village is around 1000 years old. Mainly isolated life. Until the 1970s, Kyparissi was not connected by road to the rest of Laconia, the only way to get there was by sea. This isolation is still reflected today in the general aura of the village. We think time has stood still. It is no coincidence that last summer the filming of the series took place in KyparissiVardianos to Sporka” , the television adaptation of the short story by Alexandros Papadiamantis broadcast on ERT. The choice of Cypress to film a series set in the 19th century was excellent. Even in the 21st century of tourism development, Kyparissi remains a destination that retains its traditional color without trying. Much like a village on a popular tourist island in the Cyclades or Sporades would have been in the 1970s.

The streets of the village are narrow, barely suitable for a car. But we don’t recommend using it while you’re here anyway. It is worth parking it on arrival and walking around enjoying nature, that is, fir trees, cypresses and acacias. The well-kept courtyards of the houses with the flowers. Walk the uphill path near Vrysi and visit the ancient asclepion of Kyfants (as Kyparissi was called in ancient times), the rock-cut troughs that were filled with thermal water from the mountain.

Also, a very nice walk, especially in the afternoon, is towards the church of Agios Georgios. You will walk along the beach in the open sea or in the port of Kyparissios, where there are also luxury yachts. After all, Kyparissi was one of the places Diana and Dodi Alfaged visited in the summer of 1997, shortly before they lost their lives in the Paris car crash.

Where are you going to swim?

There are two beaches in the village of Paralia. THE Small and Large Sand they are not what their name suggests, as both are pebble beaches. Their waters are crystal clear, relatively shallow and unaffected by waves.

At a distance of two kilometers from the village is the beach of Agia Kyriaki with its incredible seabed (it is worth coming with a mask) and warm clear blue waters. Also in the wider and remote area 20 kilometers its famous beach is located Focianou, one of the most beautiful in the Peloponnese. Also in the area there are many coves accessible by private boat, such as the cove desert, its closed shore Vlychada and the isolated Balogheri.
