The race is on

Today marks the start of this year’s Tour de France, the most publicized cycling race in the world. Attracting the crème de la crème of the cycling world, the three-week race will take place over challenging terrain in Denmark and France. The Grand Départ, the first stage of the race, starts in Copenhagen where 40,000 cyclists cross the busiest cycle section in the world, the Queen Louise Bridge, every day!

Regular cycling is a great way to stay in shape and can also have a positive impact on mood and mental health. Like swimming, walking and yoga, it’s a low-impact activity that’s gentle on the joints and it’s never too late to get back on track.

Try a cycling holiday

Tempted to try a cycling holiday for the first time? Solos offers an excellent selection of cycle tours on scenic country trails, national parks and coastal cycle routes. One of our most popular holidays will take you on a week of meandering on two wheels along scenic cycle paths and back streets in the beautiful Eastern Algarve and southern Spain. Rated “easy to medium,” the varied itinerary includes typical Algarve towns and villages, a ferry to the Spanish town of Ayamonte for a cycle through the salt flats, and a gentle circuit around a nature reserve.

It’s not all go-go-go. There is also a free day in the charming resort of Monte Gordo. Remember that parties are sociable, organized and relaxed events where you will have plenty of opportunities to mingle with other solo travelers and discuss the day’s activities.

Let e-bikes take over

Not sure how far your legs will take you? We have a fantastic e-bike trip through the woods and hills of the Sierra Aracena in northern Andalusia, starting and ending in the charming Spanish city of Seville. Our four hand-picked routes also take in the famous whitewashed villages or white towns from Andalusia.

For those who prefer to cycle or not, our activity holidays in Croatia, Zakynthos in Greece and Costa de la Luz in Spain combine shorter countryside rides with other activities such as kayaking, sailing, swimming, walking and wine tasting.

There won’t be much for the Tour de France competitors as they go head-to-head over the 2,068-mile race. Look out for Britain’s eight-man team, the Ineos Grenadiers, which will include Geraint Thomas, Dani Martinez, Tom Pidcock and Adam Yates as the race ends with a descent down the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Good luck!
